We have had a very successful sports year this year in all the extra-curricular areas. The hockey season was particularly successful with 3 wining teams. The basketball, equestrian, golf, swimming and cross-country teams all had a very enjoyable and successful year. The summer sports have started including athletics, cricket and tennis with lots of events and matches to be played in this short summer term. HOCKEY Well done to all hockey players this year. There was so much effort and enthusiasm throughout all teams in all age groups. We are always impressed with the dedication and love for the game shown by the Muckross hockey players. The hockey season ran quite late due to the snow days in the winter, resulting in the finals being pushed later in the year than usual. Well done to all teams this year and especially to the Senior 1’s who won the Leinster Plate final, the Senior 3’s who won the Leinster Senior 3 league and to the Minor B’s who won the Leinster Minor B league. Well done to the Junior A’s as runners up in the Leinster Junior A league AND runners up in the Leinster Junior Cup. The Minor D’s and 1st Year B’s were also runner-up in their leagues. The Junior B’s, Junior C’s, Junior D’s and the Minor C’s all reached the semi-finals of their leagues. The Senior 4’s and 1st Year A’s both reached the quarter finals of their leagues. The Senior 2’s, Junior E’s and Minor E’s all reached the play-off stages for their leagues. Well done! ATHLETICS Well done to all athletes who took part in the East Leinster Athletic Championships. This was held in Irishtown Stadium. Muckross was extremely well presented throughout all the events with over 60 athletes involved. All girls who were competing had an enjoyable time and performed with great enthusiasm and determination. The new training twice weekly proved very popular with up to 40 runners every week. The training culminated in a trainng race in DCU and the East Leinster Race in Avondale in January Well done to the following girls who qualified to run at the Leinster schools cross country competition in Santry in February. -Ciara Feeley, Christine Cullen and Sarah Windle. -The Junior A team (Kate Murray, Beth O’Brien, Isabelle Flanaghan, Ali O’Riordan, Aislinn O’Brien, Aislinn McCann). -The Senior Team(Ciara O’Rourke, Sinead Kennedy, Kate O’Neill, Hannah Collins, Clodagh Ni Cleirigh and Alice Farrelly) The Junior Mountain Running team was also delighted to win silver medals at the Schools Mountain Running Competition in March. Sarah Windle came 2nd and Ciara O’Rourke came 3rd in their respective age group races. SWIMMING The swim team were successful in the Leinster Schools Swimming Gala this year in January The Junior Relay Team and Senior Relay team both won bronze medals Aoife Byrne won a gold and silver medal Aoife Murray won a silver medal Well done to Aoife Byrne and the Junior Relay team who travelled to Galway to participate in the All-Ireland Schools gala. BASKETBALL Well doen to all basketball players this year who trained and competed in various matches. A special congratulations to the Cadette B team who reached the final of the league and the Under 16 team who reached the quarter final of the league. TENNIS There are 10 tennis teams this year in the Leinster Schools Tennis League. There has been a great response this season to training and the players are all showing lots of skill and enthusiasm. It is the first time in 5 years that we have a Senior 1 team in the premier league. All teams are unbeaten so far in the first rounds. EQUESTRIAN The equestrian team was reinstated this year and has so far been a great success. Currently competing for the team are Maggie Brennock, Sarah Eustace and Sonja Egan. They competed in the Hoof-prints Inter-Schools League. They came 4th in the teams events and achieved 3rd, 4th, 7th and 10th places in the individual events. The golf team played in the All Ireland Schools Golf Tournament in Clontarf in March. The Junior team consisted of Emma Kinney, Anne-Marie Conlon and Ruth Shaw. Alex Hernan competed in the Senior Competition. Well done to the Junior Team who placed 2nd in Ireland overall. CRICKET We have 4 cricket teams this year. The league has started and the Minor and Junior teams are excited to play their matches. DOMINICAN CUP Our Senior hockey development squad, Senior basketball team and soccer team participated in the Dominican Cup this year held in March in Cabra College. Our hockey team were runners-up in their tournament, the soccer team came 3rd and the basketball team came 3rd in their group. An enjoyable day was had by all. SPORTS DAY We will hold the first Muckross Park College Sports Day for 10 years on Friday 6th may. All pupils will participate in a range of events and games. The highlight of the day will be hotdogs for lunch! And the 6th year versus staff hockey match. The day will end with the annual sports awards assembly. This is a day to celebrate and congratulate all sports participants in Muckross Park College.
